When you attend the annual extended family gift exchange, the last things you expect to share are germs. But often we leave holiday gatherings with more than just this year’s version of Tickle me Elmo. Often, we leave with a virus.
Not sick? Follow these guidelines to increase your chances of staying well.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
- Boost your immune system by eating a well balanced diet, exercising regularly, managing stress and getting enough rest – even of the holidays.
If you do get sick, coworkers and peers will appreciate you taking preventive measure not to spread the bug.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near water, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
- Keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. And, if you get the flu, stay home from work, school and social gatherings. You are most contagious one day before symptoms develop and five days after becoming sick
